A nation hungry for the West

Driven by Manifest Destiny—the belief that the United States was divinely ordained to expand from the Atlantic to the Pacific—the nation reaches westward. Growing numbers set out in search of land, freedom, and a better future. California, still part of Mexico, becomes the focus of their hopes and ambitions.

Victoria and her family lead a prosperous, secure life. But the promise of the West proves irresistible to her husband, an ambitious land speculator. Leaving everything behind, they set out with their children and servants along the California Trail.

With every mile, they move farther not only from the life they have known, but from the order that held it together. Old certainties begin to lose their meaning. Buried conflicts resurface. And the farther the travelers push toward the Pacific, the less they can escape what they carry with them: their beliefs and prejudices, their hopes and fears—and their past.

Drawing on contemporary accounts and the historical record, NO ROAD WEST tells the story of people journeying toward a new world while carrying the old one within them. It is a story of freedom and possession, guilt and responsibility—and of what remains of us when the order that binds us loses its power.

For when there are no longer rules to protect or restrain us, what human beings are capable of comes into the open.

What we choose to do with that capacity is up to each of us.
